  • Mediation Garden 'Silence' in Gorki Park, Moscow

In the summer of 2021, a joint project by MOX and Polish contemporary artist/sculptor and performer Paweł Althamer – a meditation garden called “Silence” – opened on Arts Square next to the Garage Museum in Moscow's Gorky Park. The garden was designed to be a special environment where city dwellers could fully immerse themselves, awakening a sense of presence in the here and now and allowing them to feel time slow down and step away from the relentless pace of urban life.

Over six thousand plants were densely planted in a compact space, radically altering the setting and transforming a corner of the city park into the edge of a coniferous forest bordered by a meadow. This unexpected rupture in the urban landscape was achieved through the harmonious composition of the garden’s elements: the main meditation area, sheltered by a small artificial mound that adds spatial depth and muffles city noise, and a field of tall grasses and wildflowers.

The space evokes a sense of a hidden sanctuary – secluded from prying eyes and inviting visitors to reveal their true nature. Flanked by birch trees and overgrown with grass, the path marks the beginning of a journey of self-discovery and a transition from city life to one of quiet meditation. The central area, designed to help visitors ground themselves and connect with their emotions, is framed by the soft forms of pine trees, birches, rowans, and shrubs. Moss-covered stumps and fallen trees further enhance the illusion of a natural forest. The meditator’s gaze is drawn to an open expanse teeming with native grasses and blooms – a landscape familiar to anyone who grew up in central Russia – which offers an incredible sense of calm and inner strength.
