Located in a cottage community near Moscow, this garden called for a subtle harmonizing of existing elements alongside the creation of a fresh aesthetic language. The result is a seamless design—a finely tuned mechanism—that beautifully complements the home’s strict modernist architecture.

The MOX team joined the project as the house’s reconstruction neared completion. The building’s sharp, contemporary lines no longer harmonized with the surrounding landscape, calling for new conceptual solutions that respected the owners’ lifestyle and, of course, preserved the beautiful trees from the previous version of the garden. The space in front of the main facade was used less and therefore was left calm, formal, and representative, with a comfortable walkway. The focus of the landscape design shifted to the rear façade, where an oval lawn serves as the centrepiece, with straight pathways converging towards it – an echo of the new house’s architectural geometry. This shift from sharp geometric angles to curved lines also serves a practical purpose: it prevents a full view through the property, concealing areas that require privacy and seclusion. The lawn is framed by neatly trimmed deciduous hedges arranged in several tiers, creating a structured frame, and is intersected by masses of fluffy Deschampsia cespitosa (tufted hairgrass) and clipped shrubs. These guide the eye to the centre of the lawn and establish a clear structure, linking different garden elements into a cohesive story. At the same time, the lawn space remains open and can easily be used for play or relaxation.

The colour scheme of the facades is also reflected in the planting: flower beds consist mainly of white flowers with accents of cool blues – mirroring how the white surfaces of the house are broken up by blue architectural details. Burgundy and orange perennials complement the terracotta sections of the facade, while the terraces are adorned with clipped Crataegus x lavallei (lavalle hawthorn), which takes on a warm hue in autumn. Together, the house and garden form a harmonious whole, with every element thoughtfully connected on multiple levels.
